More and more people today have access to wireless communication devices that are also Java enabled. There are also as many people filling spare time by playing cheesy games on the same devices. Imagine developing and then playing old school arcade games on your very own PDA! This is the basis for our group's idea.
Using Java 2 Microedition, we plan to design and produce a new edition of the Pac Man game. The gameplay will be the same as arcade Pac Man, but using certain buttons on the communication device. Will will import .png images to use as backgrounds and characters.
The hardware and software that are required are as follows:
J2ME - we have access to the software
cellular phone or PDA with Java Enabled - Motorola i90 cellular phone and Compaq
Pocket PC access
means to get our program onto the hardware - uplink cable and software for the
phone, USB port for the Pocket PC
There will be many possible features that can be changed based on time and risk
assessmnet. For example, we can always add more levels, make more advanced chasing
algoritms for the ghosts, a quit function, and an options menu (pause, change
speed, or change levels).
Once we are finished, we can talk to Nextel and try to get our game added to
the downloadable library that they use for all customers to download games and
other applications to their phones so that everyone and their mother could have
a copy of our game.
Sun offers J2ME for free; click here to go to the download page. There are free compiled and source code sample applications that come with the download. The technology will not be too difficult to learn, as it is Java code that uses different library files. All of the library files are well documented on the Sun website. We also have successfully downloaded a game (sample) to the Motorola i90c phone and it ran, so we think that actually getting a working program is very feasible.
